South African company Naked Insurance has launched a native application within OpenAI's popular generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT.

The feature allows ChatGPT users to get a binding quote for vehicle insurance from Naked, which the company believes could be a first from any insurer globally.

An Underwriting Management Agency (UMA) is an agent of an insurer - in other words a broker. You cannot buy insurance policies from Naked through your normal insurance broker, you have to buy it directly from them. It means they are a special kind of broker who can make underwriting decisions on behalf of the insurer - in this case Hollard.

I have also spent some time in the insurance business - both as a broker and directly with insurance companies. In fact, I have an ACII which I acquired in the early 1980's. My categorisation of Naked does not make all direct insurers brokers, but it definitely makes Naked an insurance broker.

I use them and had no issues. With quotes even on their app it was pretty efficient and accurate not to mention beating everybody on price. Not sure how their competition Pineapple is.

Claimed for a windscreen last year no issues.

Cureently in process with a claim (been approved) for for 2 wheel repairs and tyre replacements thanks to our lovely potholed roads here in GP.

As per their response to me, if only the tyres are damaged it won't be covered. They need damage to the vehicle as well. In this case it was the wheels that were also damaged.

Problem with AI is accoutnability... it has none.

I have been a relatively happy client of naked insurance for about 5 years now - including 2 major claims that were handled a hell of a lot faster and smoother than I ever expected.

But I am failing to fully understand this move. Why do they need this? What is wrong with their existing app based interface, which was presumably locked down and controlled by them? It worked well enough to generate quotes in real time.

What is this chatGPT integration brining to the table, and why?

I am not sure I want to be sharing the sort of information one needs to provide in order to get an insurance quote with chatGPT under any circumstances.
