The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate’s proposed operational budget for the financial year, starting July 1, is more than R4.7-billion, which includes R1.7-billion for operating the MyCiTi bus service.

Regular and ongoing road maintenance is also a priority, says Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas.

“We have allocated over R1.9-billion from our operational budget for the 2026/27 financial year to road maintenance.”

A billion rand doesn't go very far these days. I am located close to one of these projects (the Claremont corridor), and traffic disruption has been a pain for many months. The work is years overdue, so hopefully it will be worthwhile.

And apparently overdue because of corruption. Do cape townians use myciti or is it just the refugees?

When I visit cape as tourist I use miciti. Much cheaper and safer than uber or bolt for short distances (5-10km). Only problem with public transport is that you need to wait for the bus to arrive at a certain time. Otherwise, great and clean experience.

Sorry, let me update my question to do only refugees and tourists use myciti?

I found out when I was there that you can't even apple pay and have to buy a card, so as a "tourist" I just took my car instead.

You have to get a miciti bus card. I used it back in October 2025. Never had a bad incident. Maybe it changed since then? Using your own car is also perfect strategy for you! Will update you again if I visit CT and then see if it is still good.

DA is a bureucratic organisation.

They claim to be anti RedTape, but are the biggest creator of unneccessary rules.

Back in the day I made extensive use of MyCiti. I would park my iPace at the JLR for free (and a free charge) and then use MyCiti to travel to most of my appointments in and around the CBD.

At the moment I personally know 3 people who use MyCiti from Llandudno, Camps Bay and Clifton side into the CBD. They have also mentioned other people they know that they encounter on the route.

Use to know a guy who also took it from Bloubergstrand into the CBD, but since they extended the route to Atlantis, he stopped using it.

can you use apple pay for uber ?
In Sydney? Cant remember, my brother paid the uber, but probably, yes. You pay for everything there with apple pay, even the shopping mall parking at the boom gate.

You sure it isn't Darklands (refugees) that stopped him using it?

Now I wonder if the Claremont corridor will interfere with the 3 people from Llandudno, Camps Bay and Clifton side into the CBD.

Plenty of people use it. I'd argue it's the most versatile and well run public transport system in the country.

I used it a lot when I was a student. It was a really cheap way to get around.

Also I don't understand your aversion to the cards. They're pretty darn simple to use and get hold of. You can get them at the stations. Even at places like SPAR. Just load money on and go.

I didnt want to buy a card to use myciti the one time I wanted to use it. It was also early and the shops weren't open yet and there was no station where I was catching the bus. All this could have been avoided if I could just tap my phone when getting onto the bus.

Do you use it now that you are not a student anymore?

Yea I hear you. They should at least have an app or something. I mean they have one, but not for paying. Which seems stupid.

No I don't use it any longer. I have a car now. It's more convenient. I suppose it does have a station near my office now. I could potentially start using it for the morning commute. Traffic in my area got stupid and the MyCiti largely dodges all that. I'll look into it.

I could tap my phone all the way to dbn for the tolls. Myciti should be no different.

He did mention an increase in crime on the busses yes. Use to work on his laptop while on the bus, but he started feeling uncomfortable doing that.

Shouldn't, it is literally on the other side of Table Mountain. ;)
That route actually starts off in Hout Bay, but the locals from Imizamo Yethu don't seem to use it much. Taxi/Bus across Constantia Neck to the Industrial Areas seems more busy.
