In April 2026, sales in South Africa’s new-vehicle market increased 13.0% year on year to 47 979 units, representing not only the local industry’s 19th consecutive month of year-on-year growth but also its best April figures since 2013. That said, last month was the first time in 2026 that total sales dipped below the 50 000-unit mark, falling 17.4% compared to March 2026.
Furthermore, new-vehicle exports from South Africa dropped 4.0% year on year to 30 939 units, with industry-representative body Naamsa pointing to the impact of “ongoing geopolitical developments” on key destination markets.
With regard to local sales, Naamsa said an estimated 91.1% of April 2026’s total reported domestic figure of 47 979 units represented sales via the dealership channel, while 5.1% were sales to the new-vehicle rental industry, 2.2% to industry corporate fleets and 1.6% to government.
South Africa’s new passenger-vehicle market ended the month on 34 414 units (with rental sales accounting for 5.7% of that number), up 14.3% compared to the same month last year. Meanwhile, local sales of new light commercial vehicles (LCVs) came in at 10 966 units, up some 9.7% year on year.

GWM P300 review: why this Chinese bakkie is challenging SA’s top three pickups
Verdict
As far as bakkies go, I can understand why GWM is no longer a bit player.At R649,900, it’s a value-for-money proposition that can’t be ignored.
With a decent engine, comfortable interior and fair handling, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to people looking outside the top three.

New GWM Ora 5 for SA: 3 powertrains confirmed
The new GWM Ora 5 will soon be available in South Africa with a choice of 3 powertrains: petrol, hybrid and fully electric. Here’s what we know so far…

Chinese automaker GWM South Africa has confirmed that the new Ora 5 crossover – which is scheduled to launch locally at some point in June 2026 – will be available with a choice of 3 distinct powertrains in Mzansi.
As a reminder, GWM SA launched the fully electric Ora 03 hatchback back in November 2023, though sales proved slow. Conrad Groenewald, Chief Operating Officer of GWM SA, then told Cars.co.za in 2025 the firm had plans to “aggressively” relaunch the sub-brand.
That reboot will start with the new Ora 5, which the company has now officially confirmed will be available in turbopetrol, traditional hybrid and fully electric flavours. From what we can tell, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain detailed for some other markets is not currently on the menu for Mzansi.
The petrol derivative will employ a version of the Chinese automaker’s turbocharged 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine, here delivering 105 kW and 210 Nm to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Meanwhile, thanks to the addition of a small battery pack (seemingly a 1.09 kWh unit) and an electric motor, the traditional hybrid variant will offer peak outputs of 164 kW and 476 Nm.
