Eskom paying employees 1,195% more to produce the same amount of electricity as in 1994

In 1994, Eskom paid its employees R17,892 to produce a gigawatt-hour (GWh) of electricity. By 2025, this amount had increased to R231,985.

On Saturday, 16 May 2026, Eskom celebrated having delivered South Africa one full year without load-shedding.

1195% over 32 years is only 8.3% per annum compounded. That's not drastically more than inflation. I think the real devil in the detail are all the contractors that are now doing jobs done by employees in 1994.

Ok, I'm not understanding what the issue is here? I mean if you go back to the 80s they had 60 000 employees with less generation? The amount of employees fluctuates with the different needs.
1994 is also a very different time from now, there were 3 power stations less, there were less OCGTs, there was less transmission lines and such. So they're 3000 more employees with 3 more power stations and more infrastructure?

Yes Eskom defender. All these things were done before they were properly decolonised. Now they produce less power for 13 times more.

This seems like employee salaries adjusted for a little above inflation if I'm honest. It's not exactly the crazy statement it seems on the surface.

The real stupidly inflated costs at Eskom are not coming from what they pay their employees. Eskom isn't out there showering the plebs that work for them in money. Only the connected boys at the top will get that treatment.

Instead it's all that negligence and corruption we're paying for.

You've got people in many countries working multiple jobs with roommates just to eat and have a roof over their heads this month.

A few decades ago those same jobs allowed them to own property, a car, and save for retirement.

I'd argue inflation has already destroyed the modern world in any meaningful way.
