Plan to make electricity more affordable in South Africa

The Department of Electricity and Energy has announced plans to roll out a new system designed for municipalities to cut costs and improve power-use efficiency to help reduce electricity prices.

Electricity and energy deputy minister Samantha Graham-Maré said the model would provide several benefits, including more affordable energy, opportunities to sell power, and fewer disruptions.

She said the government had been giving grants to municipalities for a number of years to allow them to retrofit their facilities, street lights, and use various other mechanisms to improve efficiency.
Tshwane is ahead of the curve here, they found the best efficiency is not to turn streetlights on at all.

“We’ve brought in this new contracting model that allows municipalities to leverage private funding to do the retrofitting, fix their wastewater works, and all other areas that use a lot of electricity,” she said.
Yet again eyeing private funds.

Rather get Eskom and the municipalities to offer ridiculously cheap low current (6A) connections.

Every person with solar and batteries could switch to them, and use their batteries to smooth out all the usage in combination with solar. That would save everyone a lot of money.

What makes digging up the 80A cable and replacing it with a 6A cable ridiculously cheap?

Rather get Eskom and municipalities to offer ridiculously cheap V2G chargers:

and ridiculously cheap bi-directional meters and line fees, and let us compete (wheel power) with wholesalers:

So I don't really see anything there that will make electricity cheaper, just methods to use less which as we've seen in SA equates to electricity getting more expensive because Eskom must make x amount of bank.
