Me too. I was holed up in my apartment for 3 days prior to the flight with enough food and drink to last that time only. But yeah it was a crazy experience. The airport was chockers with people trying to get flights out but very few actually had. Getting to the check in desk was a mission in itself due to the sheer mass of bodies and at passport control the dumb fsck officer was trying to bribe me to let me leave.

Funny enough I was on one of the last flights out of Singapore when the airport closed for Covid, and I was in Taif in Saudi Arabia when it was the centre of the MERS outbreak.

I was actually starting to take things personally :unsure:

Uganda confirms 3 new Ebola cases

One is a driver who transported the country’s first confirmed patient.

Another is a healthcare worker exposed during treatment.

The third case is more concerning.

A Congolese woman traveled through Uganda, flew from Arua to Entebbe, sought care at a private hospital in Kampala, was discharged, crossed back into DRC.

And only later tested positive after a pilot alerted authorities.

No vaccine for this strain and the ongoing conflict in the DRC makes it very difficult to provide health care.

The DRC is a forsaken place. The Second Congo War hasn't really ended. There was a peace deal signed in 2003, but since then there have been constant minor conflicts and genocides that are an extension of that war. It is the deadliest conflict since WW2 with an estimated 6 million dead and over 8 million displaced. This has made the DRC a hotbed for outbreaks with population groups severely malnourished, making them susceptible to all manner of treatable illnesses and diseases, and they are also constantly on the move, so localised outbreaks quickly spread. There is also resistance and apprehension toward outside aid workers and vaccines due to distrust of mostly western aid.

BUNIA, Congo (AP) — Angry residents of a town at the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo attacked and burned a tent that was part of a health center where people are being treated for the virus, the staff there said Saturday. It was the second such attack in the region in a week.

No one was hurt in the attack, according to initial reports but as patients ran out to escape the fire, 18 people with suspected Ebola infections left the facility and are now unaccounted for, a local hospital director said.

The linked article is a great read and gives a good account of what aid workers are up against when trying to manage the outbreak. Now throw in roving armed groups and people constantly moving around trying to get away from the violence wherever is flares up.

I Cannot remember what year, but I had to travel to some African country. A few days prior to departure. One of the islamic terroist group started bombing the city which we would be visiting, I raised the health and safety aspect, and the trip was cancelled.

Can you not raise this? Even if to postpone?

Uhm...so I could technically raise it. Which would ultimately be assessed by the Risk department. I am the Head of Risk (and other things)

That country not Moz possibly?

I am pretty close to what's happening there as I have make sure the business is informed. So definitely wont go if its an immediate threat. But at the moment its geographically very far from where I need to be in the country

It was either Tanzania or Kenya. But I am not sure. **** I am getting old.
