Two schoolchildren and two adults have been killed in a collision between a train and a school minibus in Buggenhout in Belgium.

The bus had been carrying seven children, a driver and a chaperone at the time of the collision.
"The bus was on its way to a special education school. It concerns mainly secondary school children," said federal police spokeswoman An Berger, adding that the crash took place shortly after 08:00 local time (06:00 GMT).
Berger told Belgian TV that the minibus driver had been driving on a street parallel the railway and then turned left onto the level crossing while the barrier was already down.

Would autonomous driving make this mistake?

Self-Driving Bus Crashes Into Tram on First Day of Passenger Service in Sweden

An autonomous bus in Sweden collided with a tram on its very first day carrying passengers. No one was seriously injured, but the timing is almost comically bad - and raises serious questions about how these systems are tested and approved for public roads.

The technology is impressive. The question is whether anyone needs it - especially when the safety validation appears inadequate for actual deployment.

Autonomous vehicles have been in testing for years. Companies have driven millions of miles in controlled conditions and semi-controlled public roads. The safety case is supposed to be: we've tested this extensively, we understand the edge cases, we know when it's safe to deploy.

Brake checks a tram lol. At least no deaths I guess.

If the barrier is already down how did he get on the tracks? And took the rest of the people with him. Ai

Once you have been on a train and felt that crazy momentum there’s no way you playing chicken with a train…

You South Africans are so interesting... On average 10x more people get killed daily, in your country because of traffic accidents yet you prefer to post about accidents which happen almost 10.000 km away... What am I missing? Why is the one more worthy than the other? Help me understand. No fighting please. Just curious.

Cos our accidents are common-place and we're numb to the stupid on our roads these days.
