Also, look at more "Private owned" Gym's in your area, not necessarily Virgin Active, or Planet Fitness.

With Discovery Vitality you get a 75% discount, so I was quoted R265/month recently … but I’m considering a switch to Planet Fitness instead (which offers the same price and I have a much newer gym near me). I agree that the ratecard rate is extortionate, but at around R300/month you can’t get a business case for even a single decent treadmill far less a whole gym circuit at home.
Not a fan of more subscriptions and having to jump through hoops to meet their requirements for receiving the discount. Plus it doesn't solve the problem of the gym being full at my preferred time.

If you just want the 75% gym discount you can get Vitality Active which is around R150pm.

I had a gym membership for many years but cancelled a couple years ago. You sort of get your money back from the free smoothie per week that you get for swiping your QR code. (Virgin Active reward, separate from Vitality). However it's a massive time sink going to the gym several days a week. These days I just go for a run on the road and do some weights at home.
Yup, we’re on Vitality Active … that sub applies to all members on the Discovery Health policy. We also get a 50% discount on movies at Ster Kinekor, so we get that value back easily.

Well the only “hoop” you have to jump through is visit the gym 32 times in a year … that is around 3 times a month. If you don’t do that, you lose the discount …. but if you’re not doing that, why are you even paying for a gym membership in the first place? You can get that minimum easily done in three months and take the rest of the year off if you really must, so it’s not that onerous.

Yes you also earn Vitality points for monitoring your exercise with an Apple Watch or similar, but I don’t try game the system - I focus on my normal gym preferences and cash in Vida e coffees and smoothies whenever I have enough points.

apologies for the Necro, saw a video of a financial advisor saying now you just need any Discovery bank account(from the free account - purple) then you can add the vitality active to it. so no longer needing medical aid/life insurances as well.
