Make or break for South Africa’s most important city

Who decided that Jhb is SA's most important city? Did anybody ask the folks in Richards Bay what they think?

as long as the money is spent where it needs to be.

It wont solve it. They are about R25.2 billion in debt, with about R6 billion of that owed to Eskom.

And they have been borrowing year after year.
2024 they borrowed R2.5 billion
2025 they borrowed another R2.5 billion
2026 now another R3.8 billion they have borrowed

None of the first two loans from 2024 and 2025 has been repaid either.

And now also consider they spend R1.45 billion on unauthorised spending a year, R22.2 billion on irregular spenting and about R1 billion on wasteful spending.

So no, its basically just a stopgap. Johannesburg has serious cash flow problems, they literally just put out a budget expecting a certain income but they have never gotten close as most simply dont pay for their accounts either. And we can see that with their new rates. Complained about Cape Town rates? Youre not even close. Joburg said they will raise by about 12.5%, however its actually 60% with their fixed charges additions.

They are in serious trouble but oblivious to it.
