Ramokgopa says the plan is now to raise Free Basic Electricity to 150kWh instead of 200kWh

How about, and I know this might sound crazy and like science fiction and completely impossible to do, but hear me out...

Let's scrap all the BBBBEEE or whatever the latest acronym for it is, make south africa more attractive for people wanting to start a business, invest and expand their businesses and create some more jobs for people..

The more people that have jobs, the less free things you need to give away and the less free things you need to give away, the more money you have to start improving education and other basic needs that will help people build a better future for themselves.. more money to tackle crime and attract more tourists because they feel safe, more money into the economy again...
There's no reason we can't do both. I also don't agree with the definition of indigent. It should not be based on poverty but on your ability to work and age.

Sounds great and will works for a portion of the population, and yes, we will definitely be on the up and up. But let's be honest, a lot of the people demanding free everything have no intention of ever working ifthey can help it.

They don't have an intention of paying because they can't afford it and can't find work. They don't have an intention of not working.

I have some guys that will disagree with you.

The number of electricians I knew from the other company suffering from “black tax” was substantial.

Sisters etc having kids and refusing to work even as a maid and guilt tripping the ones that are working into giving them money.

Same with some cousin they would complain about who would leech of the other siblings and the parents would also guilt trip the sibling into giving the other siblings money.

So no, I disagree with you there

There wouldn’t be all these Zimbabweans and Malawians working in the farms, as gardeners etc if SA people actually wanted to do those jobs.

Same as the Europeans. Western ones to be particular. They use the Eastern Europeans to do the grape picking etc in summer coz the locals want nothing to do with such jobs.

Mexico and USA is same dynamic.

Sure you get those in the family that have everything provided for them. But then you get those on SASSA grants. Nobody wants to live off just R3000 a month because it buys you almost nothing. They all would want to do some work and earn more if they could.

Why not cut the free electricity and just sell electricity cheaper? ie it should be about 8-10% cheaper electricity for all.

Now their free proposal will cost R36 billion a year, which is actually quite massive. It will mean current tariffs will have to increase by over 10% to accomodate this, but erase it for all then it should drop tariffs by 10%.

Their current debt servicing costs are 15% of tariffs cost. Government has actually given them R450 billion in cash and guarantees to reduce debt, they have only decreased by about R50 billion.

And while all staff barely get 3-4% increase, Eskom gets 7% year on year. And guess you didnt know they get 3x bonuses a year.
1. STI Bonus (cost the company R4.2 billion in 2025
2. Production Bonus (cost the company R1.2 billion in 2025
3. Annual Bonus/13th Cheque (cost them R1.5 billion in 2025)

So the average Eskom Employee earns R1 million a year. Then add the bonuses, and a further R10000 cash bonus for wage agreements. Then add in Housing allowances (R7000+ per month, Danger pay, Skill Based Allowances, Shift Allowances.

It can add on 30% of their salary while most corporates would be lucky with 5% extra.

And while corporates cut back on employee benefits, Eskom has added more dramatically. Benefits has increased by over 1000% in the past 20 years at Eskom.

We will always have a society where some people have to pay for others.

....and once we have diluted all available tax income, what's the next cunning plan

Pro tip. If you can't afford children, don't have children. It's a really effective approach to ammeliorating economic stagnation and decline. Having 10 kids who will spend their formative years starving, cannot possibly find jobs or have a productive future is insane.

Making society at large responsible for said kids is just next level Africa.

Seems they hand to grandma to look after, while having another one
