Amazon Prime launched for R59 per month in SA

Is the 30-day free trail not free?? I want to sign up for the 30-day, however, must enter card details. I am interested in the annual subscription. Do they deduct immediately the annual fee, or only after the first 30-days?

It's an old market trick, easier for them to get you to say yes further on if it's later "hassle free". Very unlikely these guys will have billed you yet, or it's refundable usually.

The Luna side is a bit confusing as it's primary function, game streaming, isn't available here so it just throws you on to the claim games page but doesn't mention anything about the game streaming not being available in the region.

Claiming game codes is still a nice bonus but would like to see them open up local servers here at some point, although I don't think that's going to happen too soon as there are lots of other bigger markets that don't have it yet either.
True, but we do have AWS servers around SA, since it launched here first. So the datacentres exist for them to launch luna streaming

It's usually a way to ensure that you dont use the trial multiple times - so it's linked to your bank account.
They will charge you some small fee like R1 to your account to confirm the account and then usually reverse it immediately thereafter.

I mean there are AWS servers basically everywhere. The infrastructure to support game streaming is a different thing entirely, they have to invest a lot in specialised hardware for it and I just don't see our market being big enough to justify that right now.

These are the only supported territories at the moment:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Germany
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain
  • Austria
  • Poland
  • Netherlands
  • Belgium
  • Sweden
  • Portugal
  • Luxembourg

There are much bigger markets than SA still missing from this list.

It feels like while Amazon is improving their local service, Takealot seems to be getting worse. So many things I search for on Takealot these days are just listings for drop shipped items from China with the familiar ships in 14-16 days nonsense.
Those delivery times remind me of the good old days buying Xbox 360 games and DVD's from take2.co.za

I think you're right
I think the claim of game streaming was inserted by whoever wrote the article

The Amazon Prime page just talks about claiming PC games which is whats available right now, doesn't say anything about streaming

Aha, there we go. My free "lifetime" offer of Prime Video from Vodacom that I've had for the last 7 or 8 months, has just ended. I just got an email from Amazon saying it's ended and I need to sign up for a paid subscription.

That's a very short life span you had there.

Actually wait, I just got another email saying Welcome to Prime. Went to Amazon to see wtf was going on and it says I'm a member and clicking on the plan it shows this...

I'll need to check next month statement if it's still a freebie thought tbf it's R20 cheaper than it was so here's hoping :p

So it's changed from free Video to free full membership.

Is it best to select the monthly option first, for the 30-day free trail, then thereafter after the 30 days take out the annual subscription? They might think, this guy paid for the year...he does not need the 30 day free trail...

Whichever option you pick is only charged after the 30 days.
