What's the most interesting small town you've visited in South Africa?

I was in a place called Kariega in the Eastern Cape over 10 years ago. They had this amazing little home-based restaurant that I found via my Garmin. I had the most delicious ribs and chips there. The pricing was also very good. Not to mention the portion size. The place was empty except for my newlywed wife and me. If not for the Garmin I would never have known it was a restaurant. I forget the name of it, but I know it was themed all about Marilyn Monroe.

I liked Pringle bay, very small quaint little town, very narrow streets, but they somehow let people build up the town without making it look like a tourist trap, quite rare, although I for one never understood how this little town never got a petrol station ANYWHERE (hell of an missed opportunity)

nearest is in Betty's bay or further in Kleinmond.

Stellenbosch and Montague in the WC.
Stellenbosch is something like a quarter of a million people. I don't think that's a small town. It's got a university for crying out loud.

Prince Albert was great. Stayed there a few nights a while back. Also drove through it again a couple of years ago. The way they handle the water rights just flowing down the side of the road with the gates to redirect to certain properties is crazy. It's like the place is stuck in time.

Klaarstroom, friend of mine lived there. I visited him a few times in the few years he was there. Was surreal how quiet everything is....except for us in the evenings.

Hogsback used to be nice. But over the years it was also one of the saddest towns to see deteriorate. I haven't been there in a couple of years, must make plan this month.

Kenhardt in the N Cape. Like an old town out of the Wild West, but with a 540MW solar power station.

Kariega was established in 2021. Are you not thinking of Stormsriver? They have the Marilyn's 60s diner.

Bethlehem....since my dad grew up in that place. He still owns flats...if you know you know

Been to many small towns, none of which I found particularly interesting.

Scottburgh

5 bottle stores and 2 pubs in one street tells you people WANT to forget they live there.
