Amazon's strategy to get South Africans hooked for R59 per month

Amazon's launch of its Prime subscription in South Africa is part of its aggressive strategy to beat local competitors by overwhelming customers with a host of affordable benefits.

The American firm's largest domestic competitor is Takealot, which offers a similar product to Prime called TakealotMore Premium at R99 per month.

That's their plan in every market.

Push out all local competition and become the monopoly. It's worked really well for them.

We are getting a bargain.

The USA is paying:

$14.99 / R244,31 per month
$139 / R2 264,36 per year

How long will they keep prices low? No doubt for a few years, but it won't last. I mean, sure, grab the bargain for now but maybe don't get hooked on to many series..

Personally, without the TV factor they have nothing I'm looking for, I like to shop physically and am not a gamer.

The issue I have is they are coming in low to get everyone to move over and to kill takealot but as soon as takealot is dead and there is no real competition they will send prices through the roof. Common tactic for big monopolies.
100%. Just look at their tactics with Amazon Basics products in the US to see where this is heading.

Sadly they have momentum now so may as well 'skep pap terwyl dit reen' or however that saying goes.

Their asian shows are quite old, wish they could refresh it a bit. But am happy to pay upfront for the year.
