Amazon's plan to get South Africans hooked on Prime

The issue I have is they are coming in low to get everyone to move over and to kill takealot but as soon as takealot is dead and there is no real competition they will send prices through the roof. Common tactic for big monopolies.

I just want both to survive and compete.

It was such a disappointment when Takealot bought Kalahari.
Now there can be proper competition again.

That's the best for consumers.

Takealot could compete, though we both know they probably won't... that's not the SA way.

The difference is most SA companies prefer running profitable businesses.

Amazon doesn't mind running at a loss for years on end as long as they're acquiring more customers. Then when everyone is using their service they can start raising prices and get to profitibility.

I think it really depends on the items.

I added 4 or 5 items to my Takealot order about 2 weeks ago ... then pure interest, decided to look at Amazon. They were about 15% or more cheaper on everything - so immediatly added into Amazon cart and ordered

How long do you think Takealot will profitable for if they don't start competing?

I just don't see a scenario where they can compete in that race. They cannot afford to run at a loss for an extended period of time hoping that they'll turn a profit eventually, Amazon will win that race everytime.

I wonder what government may come up with here; maybe a Trump-types-invading-our-online-land tax

Ja but when takealot inevitably moan about it they must also remember they've been gradually paving the way for customers to seek alternatives. They've been unwilling to regulate the tactics of their sellers and people are gatvol of the price gouging and fake goods.

Same fake goods are on Amazon.

Ive noticed lately with Amazon the same starting to happen. Eventually there will be no difference and it will all come down to who has the best aftersales support. At least with Amazon you can filter Sold By Amazon to filter out some of the junk. Takealot made it difficult to spot when you deal with a third party or grey imports.

Yet to test this but it seems Prime may even have a form of “Family Sharing” in that my wife’s account shows up listed in my profile.

She reckons she’ll test it soon, but if that works it’s one feature nobody else has and nobody has mentioned.

It’s my biggest annoyance with the Checkers60 subscription having to use one account with the stupid OTP system.
