Lottery jackpot: Mashatile’s family tied to new multibillion-rand operator deal

Do you have a receipt of numbers at the time of purchase?

No, it just displayed them on the app at the time of purchase but you don’t receive a receipt or any other confirmation unless you take a screenshot.

It had slipped my mind that the same numbers are played for powerball and powerball xtra and to check there for the double 27 earlier.

This is such a strange response to this person.

We can see you're not convinced. All we can do is keep sharing the facts and running the games according to the required rules and procedures. Hopefully we'll be celebrating your win one day instead of debating the draw!

Facts are that there are more questions than answers. The required rules and procedures are set by themselves, irrespective of what is communicated through public policy.

Fair enough, you're entitled to your view. All we can say is that the draw process is subject to testing, verification and independent oversight. If you ever spot something specific that concerns you, feel free to raise it with us.

Who are the notaries, and what are their procedures? The public doesn't know.

In the other lotto thread, I posted two examples, one from the US and the other from the EU, of a detailed audit per draw. Why can't it be done here?

Makes it very hard for the right people to win then!

Monitoring Operations

The NLC has a Compliance Division that monitors the operation of the National Lottery by:
  • Conducting random inspections of Lottery draws.
  • Undertaking security inspections of draw equipment and processes
  • Auditing the figures on Lottery sales, weekly payments to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF), and prizes paid out.
  • Visiting retailers of lottery tickets to physically verify compliance and also audits retailer data. Monitoring the lottery operator’s social responsibility initiative.

Random inspections... Auditing... yeah, let's not talk about the lottery heists.

EDIT: Actually I should quote the rest:

Fraudulent activities are detected from time to time. While the majority are dealt with by the security section of the lottery operator, criminal charges are sometimes laid and some cases are prosecuted.

The NLC sets high targets for the operator’s performance in terms of:

  • The reliability and availability of the on-line lottery system
  • Validation and prompt payment of winnings
  • Customer service

I need to ask the NLC, how high did Sizekhaya nail those three targets?

Three days in: Sizekhaya celebrates strong national response; first PowerBall multi-millionnaire and expanded National Lottery access

Our first few days have delivered tremendous encouragement.'

Three days after assuming responsibility for operating the National Lottery, Sizekhaya Holdings says it is encouraged by strong player participation, a positive public response to its refreshed lottery offering and the creation of the first National Lottery PowerBall multimillionaire under its stewardship.

A KwaZulu-Natal player won Tuesday night’s estimated R128 million PowerBall jackpot. The winning ticket was purchased at a retail store in the province.

While the transition to Sizekhaya from the previous operator has generally proceeded smoothly, a small number of players experienced difficulties purchasing tickets through certain banking and digital channels during the first days of operation.

The issues were identified quickly and are being resolved in partnership with banking and retail stakeholders.

“The vast majority of lottery transactions have been processed successfully and we continue to see steady improvement across all channels,” says Sizekhaya chief operatingo Officer Fundi Sithebe.

Since assuming operation of the National Lottery on 1 June, Sizekhaya has activated a national retail network of more than 5 500 terminals, trained more than 10 000 retail personnel, expanded access through new retail and banking partnerships and successfully introduced a refreshed National Lottery offering that includes larger jackpots and improved odds for players.

The launch has also marked the return of live National Lottery draws to television screens, with Tuesday night’s PowerBall draw broadcast live on eTV.

“Response from players, retailers and partners has been overwhelmingly positive and demonstrates the enduring place that the National Lottery occupies in the lives of South Africans,” Sithebe says.

“To create a new multimillionaire in our first week of operating the National Lottery is a wonderful milestone. We are delighted for the winner and wish them every success as they begin what will undoubtedly be a remarkable new chapter in their life.”

She adds the first few days of operations have reinforced Sizekhaya’s confidence in the future of the National Lottery.

“Our first few days have delivered tremendous encouragement. We have seen strong participation, celebrated a life-changing jackpot winner and successfully launched our national operations.

“We remain confident, focused and excited about the future. This is only the beginning of an eight-year journey and we are committed to building a National Lottery that all South Africans can be proud of.”

Lol, this is a 'self-published' article. Couldn't they pay a journalist to interview them? Going by social media the public response is mostly negative.

Very odd replies. So .... personal and snippy.

Every one of those are compromised so that will be of little use.

The system may be imperfect, but failing to follow the correct procedures only weakens your position further. Reporting through the right channels and following proper process is still your best legal protection.

It is a bit of a circus at this time. I am not sure if it only happens in the ABSA app, but people are still reporting duplicate line numbers, and it is not just with the latest Powerball result. This is also happening with the ordinary Lotto, and with the Daily Lotto.

Absa is mum. As far as I can observe this is only applicable to the quick picks. People need to check what is being selected for a quick pick for them, and what is reported afterwards. It needs to be made public whether this is a bug, and to what extent it is effecting the numbers selected and possibly the payouts. If the process is automated, this could potentially have compromised the integrity of the National Lottery.

This is a flaw, regardless, and nothing is being said about it. It is widespread enough now.

The other thing which is just, lol. People who are complaining about the new ticket prizes... It is being explained that there are now new games more suitable for everyone's budget. Basically, poor people have to go play other games. You can't make this schit up, it goes against the ethos of the national lottery.

People with winnings on Ithuba can't check their tickets or claim anything until Sizekhaya has confirmed the data. I thought it would have been up to the NLC, they have the funds, right?

It's a Mashatile.
you say that, but they managed to sweep a R100m+ jackpot straight to cadres' pockets on their very first draw

from that perspective the launch went exactly as planned

I think there are irregularities with the tender but your allegations that someone in the fold was a winner, are harder to prove.

Played a couple on the absa app again for tonight’s draw for research purposes. No duplicates. Took a screenshot this time so will see if anything changes later.

I'd feel safer wearing a condom.

You start telling them things they are protecting or cadres with and you'll get hit.
