Sad news ... celebrity deaths.

Quite affected by his death, not sure why. Is it because of his awesome music, growing up, memories and songs? Or they the Disney movies? Mom listening to his tapes in the car constantly? Or is it knowing that a person you've never met made a difference in your life, and you now know they will never make any new art?

John Berks who was born John Berkowitz in Krugersdorp on 24 August 1941 passed away after a long illness today in Johannesburg in 2022 aged 80.

The legendary broadcaster's career spanned 1964 – 2001.
John Berks who grew up in Klerksdorp was born the youngest of three siblings to Jewish parents Louis Berkowitz and Hennie Nochimowitz.
When his father died when he was fourteen, he dropped out of Milner High School, before completing standard eight, and found work at Dandy Polish and on the production line of a soap factory in Rosettenville owned by a family member. He later worked as a delivery boy for the Klerksdorp Rekord and then at the Germiston Advocate as a sports journalist, after which he completed his national service in the SADF.
John who had a keen interest in radio, took elocution lessons with Colin du Plessis, the SABC English language service broadcaster, to remove his Afrikaans accent and make himself more sellable in broadcasting.
He auditioned for LM Radio and was offered a position in 1964, eventually becoming a programme manager for them in 1969 in Johannesburg before leaving them in 1970.
After LM Radio, he would work for Springbok Radio, Swazi Music Radio, Radio 5, and Capital Radio 604 before joining the independent radio station Channel 702 on 1 October 1981, taking over the breakfast show, and by 1983 was the highest-paid DJ on radio in South Africa.

John Berks retired from 702 and all broadcasting in January 2001.
John is remembered for his irreverent humour, ability to mimic several accents, and amazing telephone pranks.
