Preferential pricing approved for two of Eskom's biggest users

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) approved a preferential pricing deal for two of Eskom's biggest power users, with tariffs that are less than a fifth of what regular households pay.

Energy and financial analysts have questioned how Eskom will be able to support the deal, especially given that the tariff is also over 50% lower than the amount the utility spends to generate electricity.

Somewhat fair would then be to build large solar plants close to them, so that the maximum possible portion of the power they use can come from that profitably, even if not all the time. Because this isn't just a discount to a reasonable price level. They're now paying the equivalent of the 2010 rate in today's money. That's 16 years, going on 17 years ago. So the discount is way beyond simply reasonable.

Otherwise deals like this will just translate into 5-10 years from now's weirdly excessive normal rates. And it will affect the workers who's jobs are spared just like everybody else.

But anyway. Good luck to Eskom in 5-10 years when more regular paying customers who they've been squeezing rotten have gone solar. With the present ludicrous price increase regime they might be staying afloat for now, but with this deal they may as well have signed off on being even less profitable sooner 🤷‍♂️ Will be fun for the last few customers when they have to pay as much for a unit of electricity as a Chevy Spark or something. Just to keep this nonsensical behemoth afloat. Because that's how far it seems these idiots want to push things.

They have already lost some 20% in electricity sales, so yeah, 10 years. They should start a clock on their side. I reckon in 10 years they will be half what they are now in terms of relevance to the generation side of it.
