Just set a final deadline date and stick to it. If any poor soul still doesnt have it by then, then they need to put their life on hold and go visit the 5 star Home Affairs accomodation for a day or two.

I don't recall this being an issue like the drivers license.
Many home affairs are unable to do Smart ID's, including our local one. For us who can jump in a car and go to a nearby town it is not a big issue, massive inconvenience aside, but for others it is not as simple. Whenever I tried to make a booking at the nearest smart id equipped home affairs, there were no slots available. Now that we have a Capitec that opened I might just open a savings account to get that smart ID.

Once the booking is done, another travel is needed to fetch it.

So yes, it is still a massive issue for a big part of the population.

It has never been an issue, but you know how people like to moan. I haven't yet done it, but that's not due to any difficulty of getting one.
So his excellency the president is just causing distraction from the real issues with a non-issue?
Why doesn't that surprise us in the least

Perhaps learn to follow the conversation instead of jumping in head first to reply, can you do that?

Impersonation fraud using green ID books has increased by 400% year on year in South Africa, as fraudsters increasingly use artificial intelligence (AI) to exploit the legacy identity system.
I was recently helping someone generate a document pack which included a copy of their ID. I was sent a low quality scan of a green ID that would not have been suitable. Out of curiosity I tried using Gemini to enhance it. The AI looked like it had a lot of training data on our IDs, getting details and even the colour right. Ultimately asked for a better scan of the ID as a safer option (it still looked too bad to be AI generated).

We will stop the ID books even if we are unable to issue the new cards.
The primary government policy is that if there is a problem then it is your problem.

Seems like will have to open a capitec account to get a smart ID. Only bank near me.
I'm doing the same. Tried to open an account via the App but hard no as I don't have the ID card, need go to branch. Need ID card to open account online, but also need Capitec account to do the ID card.

I do have an FNB and Nedbank branch option but getting a booking is impossible as nothing is ever available. So will head off to a Capitec branch to open the account there.
