Secret software keeping Eskom's grid running

South Africa's state power utility Eskom uses a complex suite of control and management systems to monitor and operate the national electricity grid.

Eskom told MyBroadband that it cannot publicly disclose detailed vendor or system configurations for security and operational reasons.

His name is Warren Hurst, his photo seems to be now a stock set of images of power plant and other control rooms now.

Probably Excel. I had colleagues that used Excel for EVERYTHING. From creating documents, presentations, as a calculator, workflow charts, notes etc.

After creating whatever, he used the print to PDF function to generate a final document to give or email to someone.

Was she replaced with software?
It’s called a SCADA. Eskom is using ABB RTUs to do their monitoring etc of their entire grid.

It’s basically the same stuff I’m doing at work for monitoring and control but on a much much larger scale.

A person can’t replace all these things

For exporting logs for review yes. Not for monitoring and running the whole system.

CoCT use a similar package for their control station in Newlands

There is a screen 6m x 4m which displays the area from Koeberg on the west to Gordon's Bay on the right. Every sub-station and distribution plant is highlighted

During load-shedding, whole areas could be shut down for periods

Exactly, Isabel Fick did fokkal saving South Africa.

Hoping that someone has the renewal of the software license as the number one item on their KPIs.
