Anyone been to Bangkok/Thailand recently?

Thoughts on renting a car here and there for excursions..?

Although I know Bangkok has crazy traffic we're thinking about renting a car and driving thought to Ayuthaya and sleeping over for a night and then driving back to experience it more thoroughly?

Same for Phuket. Aiming to stay in Kata beach side but hiring a car for a few days might make the sightseeing more enjoyable.

To experience the real Thailand you must grab a scooter and hold on to the ladyboy tightly so you don't fall off.

You can work the secondary gear shift, just move it left or right for directions and squeeze to slowdown.

Car rental is obviously much safer than motorcycle. I've seen a number of injured tourists limping around who clearly had scooter or motorcycle accidents. Not a great way to ruin a holiday. Driving in Bangkok and Phuket can be a nightmare, but for side trips, it will be great.

Do not go without an international driving permit. Some rental agencies don't care about that, but in Phuket you WILL get stopped.

I have rented a car for a day in Koh Samui a couple of times, it was great fun and you see a bit more than on the normal tours.

Just don't rent a motorcycle, I have seen too many tourists that ruined their holiday renting one and thinking it will be cool, I have a motorcycle license and won't rent one there.

Thailand had one of the highest road death rates in the world.

Can confirm - we rented a scooter both in Krabi (got stopped several times to check for international drivers license) and on Koh Sumai (not stopped once) where we drove around the entire island.

Would suggest to rather rent a car unless you are experienced (and licensed) motorbike rider and have quick reflexes!

Scooter is an adventure - chill drive and easy to park (especially at night market) - with a car ... no so much.

They have already revoked/banned over 30k tourists abusing the system in a few weeks.
They also clamping down on Indian tourists entering due to their behaviour here. Next I believe will be israeli’s
