New Toyota Hilux in South Africa – Pricing revealed

The South African pricing for the new Toyota Hilux is as follows:

Xtra Cabs:

  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Xtra cab Raider X – R751,800
  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Xtra cab Raider X 4×4 – R842,200
Double Cabs:

  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Double Cab SRX – R658,500
  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Double Cab SRX 4×4 – R746,100
  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Double Cab Raider 4×4 – R892,900
  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Double Cab Legend MHEV – R945,500
  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Double Cab Legend MHEV 4×4 – R999,900

Colour me somewhat surprised, those prices aren't as horrid as I was expecting.

The MHEV aspect though, thats generally just a waste of time as far as I'm concerned.

Ya, these two are actually competitive:

  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Double Cab SRX – R658,500
  • Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 Double Cab SRX 4×4 – R746,100

Under 700 k for a bakkie like that is good.

Yeah its competitive if you trade technology for legacy.

I'm not bashing it at all, and I think the pricing is ok, but even at those prices most people will likely choose Chinese for their bakkie-fetish-town-runabout.

I read on the 4x4 forum that the SRX will come in poverty spec and steel rims, that's a lot of money for almost nothing. I'm sure the Raider will be the model to go for, but it's expensive.

GWM LT 4x4 Auto - top spec = R 649 000 (Entry level GWM LS AT = R 529 000)
Entry level Hilux 2.8 GD-6 RB SRX 6AT = R 658 500

So basically Toyota is betting that people would rather buy a steel wheeled entry level Hilux than a Top spec GWM.
I have no beef with the Hilux, and I would buy one if I was in the market for a bakkie, but man... for most people who essentially are going to treat it like a family SUV and never even see a dirt road in it; the GWM will make more sense.

GWM has been around long enough and have a big enough dealer footprint to allay most fears around parts and reliability etc. the only thing yet to be determined is resale, but if you save the money upfront (Entry level GWM with still better specs than the Hilux is more than 120K cheaper) you take a way smaller hit on the resale.
