At least 12 people have been killed in a mass shooting in an area of Johannesburg, police in South Africa say.

They say another nine people were injured in the attack at an informal settlement in Cleveland late on Tuesday, and a manhunt for suspects is under way.

"It is alleged that more than 10 suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland," the police said in a statement.

"The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle," the statement added.

Just build a super prison, and the prisoners can do forced labour to pay for their food.

isnt that sun city prison, SA prisons are pretty bleak, gangs control everything, guards are corrupt
those with money live large behind bars while we believe they are paying for their crimes, when they indeed live lavishly on the tax payers expense.

That's the problem

We need to follow El Salvador example.
It works and people good people actually have now freedom.
Prisons need to be controlled and be harse.

Don't think we need to build anything really, just ship the fsckers off to one of our remote islands and drop them off.

Couple of things:
1) The prisons are completely overcrowded, which creates the conditions for the gangs.
2) Vast majority of prisoners do not live lavishly. Eating pap and boiled eggs for 20 years is not exactly lavish.

But building mega prisons isn't enough. You need to change, bail, parole and sentencing laws such that:
- Life imprisonment should mean you die in prison of old age, not 25 years.
- Life imprisonment should be the default for murder, rape, armed robbery and kidnapping. These are crimes that cause genuine terror in the victims and likely traumatises them for life.
- Any prior criminal record upgrades sentencing for subsequent cases to life imprisonment. You get one chance.

You also need to vastly increase the amount of resources that go to policing, prosecutions and judiciary.

Police, courts and prisons are completely underfunded if you look at the budget and the amount of crime we have.
 
Me not leaving the country when I was younger was such a great f**ing idea.
Dead on the inside at this point. I pretty much hate the perpetrators as much as I do the people who raise them.

The ElSalvador prison documentaries makes me happy. Its proven that it works so i really dont know why this cant be incorporated in other high crime countries

Yeah, either way, I blame the leaders for every innocent that
dies or is raped because their non-action is the cause.

This is an extremely simple problem to solve.
Only 5 years are required to decrease the murder rate by 90%.
