Top-selling Chinese car gets 2-star safety rating in South Africa

The most affordable version of the GWM Haval Jolion sold in South Africa scored a 2-star safety rating in the Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) in tests conducted in Germany.

The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) recently bought two entry-level Jolions and shipped them overseas for crash testing.

AND? a lot of us grew up in an age where airbags didn't exist, having 2 is a luxury even if the first world doesn't like it.
I still walk with a limp and have a scar on my face because I had an accident in a car without air bags. Many people died and others have been crippled or disfigured by unsafe cars.
Most cars made in India that are sold here are death traps, find something better and if you cannot afford a proper and safe car, go without.

Cars also didn't have EBS, EBD or any other safety features. Should modern cars just leave those off as well?

There were working trains. which means fewer trucks on the road.
There were fewer cars on the road.
There were more roadworthy vehicles.
There were fewer potholes.

Comparing the roads of 20 or 40 years ago to today is not a apples to apples comparison.

The entry level VW Polo Vivo still holds a 4 star rating... with only 2 airbags.

edit: looks like they are actually 2 star rating now but VW advertise it as 4 star rating in general for the Vivo.

Come on guys...just try to do a little better, one can only assume it's intentional which makes it far far worse and complicit at that.

Long story short, cars manufactured in India are bad news.
The updated Nissan Magnite managed 5 stars in Global NCAP, so it's not as if they can't make somewhat safe vehicles. Mahindra also does pretty well in general.

Global NCAP is still a joke compared to Euro NCAP though.

South African government is to blame.
These cars are legal in South Africa.
Safety does not matter country of origin.

NHTSA sets the safety standards for US.
EU Commission via GSR sets the safety standards for EU.
National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) and the National Road Traffic Act (NRTA) sets the safety standards for SA.

NRCS and NRTA only require basic stuff like safety belts

Plus lots of people didn't... Almost as if there was a reason they started appearing
