"He said that reports from the Associated Press, amongst others, quoting Solidariteit, showed that refugee status for Afrikaners is not a viable solution.
That is a curious conclusion given the publicly available figures from the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). According to U.S. government refugee admissions data, 4,499 South African refugees were admitted to the United States between October 2025 and March 2026. Whether one agrees with the policy or not, it is difficult to argue that refugee status is not a viable option when thousands of South Africans have successfully applied, been approved, and resettled through the program.
More importantly, if refugee status is not a viable solution, then what explanation is offered for the thousands who have already made use of it?
To me, the figures suggest that for a significant number of South Africans, leaving the country through refugee resettlement was viewed as a preferable option to remaining where they were."
