SABC+ crashed after a last-minute update forced all users to sign in again

The SABC+ streaming platform experienced an outage on Thursday evening, shortly before the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 kick-off, due to a surge in simultaneous login attempts.

"A content encryption update had to be implemented on the SABC+ platform, which is a standard part of broadcasting major international sporting events," the public broadcaster said.

clearly sabc and dstv have a streaming limit of over 100k people. and now with the ram price surge it's gonna cost them a lot to buy that second raspberry pi streaming server.

I watched on DSTV and I was fine. The stream had one glip when it started buffering and I needed to go off the channel and back on again. But it did its thing

Sabc+ stream was fine. I watched it from the anthems but stopped it 5 mins in because the delay to the sabc tv broadcast was to big (80 seconds), as my laaitie was watching that in his room. I switched to a pirate stream.

The problem was with the website, not the stream. If you used the direct m3u8 links, which i shared here before, you would have no problems, because you stream straight from the cdn and does not need site auth.
