New R4.2 billion bridge officially opens in South Africa, and US plan to punish South Africa backfires

Saying the plan backfired seems wrong.

The US Government are getting loads more taxes.
I have not seen a Government that does not like getting more taxes.

That's exactly what Trump wants. More money...
The US are winning, and some people are stating it as a backfire.

I want to be part of that backfire, please.
This just means US citizens are paying more, but they can clearly afford it, or sales would be down not up.

Nothing backfired, the US government has and is making a fortune out of the taxes being paid, increased exports just make what they gain that much larger in the long run. Now go tell the people who have and are losing their jobs on a daily basis as four companies close their doors for the last time every single day, that the US plan backfired.

No the plan was to reduce imports - that failed.

There is no extra money - its more debt.

More likely that imports from SA increased, but it’s still less than it would have been otherwise, and also likely proportionally less relative to competitors.

So I went grokking with this.

I was under the impression we are still charged 30%.
Grok said this wrong and we are being taxed 10%.

Grok results:
US Tariffs on South African Imports (Key Changes):
August 7, 2025: +30% (to 30% reciprocal/IEEPA rate).
February 24, 2026: -20 percentage points (from 30% to 10% Section 122 global surcharge)

While the tariff was 30% the imports decreased to the US.
So the import tariffs at 30% did you job as you specified.

Grok Results:
US imports from South Africa did not increase overall during the 30% tariff period (August 7, 2025 – February 24, 2026).
They generally decreased or remained subdued compared to prior levels, especially in affected sectors.
