People who use one of South Africa's largest e-hailing apps must now upload their IDs and faces

Passengers of e-hailing app Bolt will now have to upload their ID numbers and pictures of themselves before they can book a ride on the platform in South Africa.

The company announced changes to the rider identity verification system across its app on Monday to strengthen driver safety in South Africa amid a recent spate of violent attacks.

What are the actual consequences of giving a fake ID number to Bolt here? denial of service if they do a spot check, or legal issues or anything? Because I don't see why we should have to give this to them...

This only generates an ID number that passes the Luhn algorithm and format. It still won't validate against a live check with the National Population Register if HA never issued the ID number.

Seems everyone wants your ID document these days. There are several "think of the children" laws going through the system in America at the moment which will require anyone using a commercial operating system to identify themselves in this type of way (which will probably have an international impact). It seems almost certain that ID documents will be part of future leaks.
