UK announces sweeping social media ban for under-16s

None of this initiates the behaviour. It enables, sure, but these issues were present all along and claiming that this idiocy will fix anything is delusional.

Unless you're claiming that social media platforms are also the advent of bullying or other anti-social behaviours?
Nobody said social media invented bullying or antisocial behaviour. It just made it easier, more public and available 24/7.

A school bully used to have a limited audience. Now they have anonymity, an algorithm and the whole internet helping spread the crap.

Banning social media won’t fix human nature, but it would remove one massive amplifier.

Yes? And? Do the skills necessary to handle any of these behaviours have a hard, daytime, clock?

Not sure what this point is about? Are you arguing scale makes a difference to ignoring untruths and falsehoods?

it would remove one massive amplifier
Perceived. Perceived amplifier. If your parents sucked so hard they couldn't explain the basics to you.

If you care what anyone says about you, the forum changes nothing. The issue is yours. And your parents'

You're completely missing the point about how human psychology and technology interact.

A daytime clock matters because containment matters. Before social media your home was a boundary where harassment stopped. Removing that boundary means the psychological toll could be 24/7.

Dismissing scale as perceived is wild. Being humiliated in front of 20 people in a hallway is fundamentally different from a viral post seen by 2mill people. The internet turns a local issue into a permanent digital footprint.

Blaming a kid's parenting because they are impacted by a literal tech algorithm designed to maximize outrage isn't the flex you think it is. It's just a refusal to understand how the modern world works.

A falsehood repeated is not a fact. Where the bullying happens has zero impact on the coping tools. None.

Being humiliated in front of 20 people in a hallway is fundamentally different from a viral post seen by 2mill people
Imagining those 2mill people give a shiat is a mental impairment and speaks to ego issues. Imagining every brain-fart is "viral" ... .equally deranged.

Blaming a kid's parenting because they are impacted by a literal tech algorithm
A falsehood repeated is not a fact. Parents who fail to teach their offspring how to deal with bullies are failures. This is binary.

A phrase that carries significant inference markers. Anyone who uses this phrase is already spewing the language of victimisation and idiocy.

understand how the modern world works
Provide evidence I do not understand how the modern world operates. Go on. There's a prize

Confirmed absolutely nothing except your distorted and highly biased view of reality. I'm sorry your parents sucked but holding the universe responsible is delusional farkwhittery of the highest order.

Maybe have a chat with mumsy and daddy? At least mine bothered to teach me how to deal with my fellow sapiens. Children are animals and quite adept at singling out oddballs and non-conformists.
Quite obviously not....

To many replies.

As someone whos partner works in school. I have numerous examples of how **** social media can be. Every example you can imagine. All tragic.

Parents can not police their child 24/7. Yes parents hold the ultimate responsibility but setting restrictions is good.

Does an alcohol limit prevent all kids from buying. No. Does it help. Dont know.

And way more ironically because you’ve handed over private conversations, lists of social connections, search data, location data etc. to social media companies.

And then we cry about fascism.
Yes we have , but not directly to the government.
There are talks that they will request Apple and Android to create a sign in with a digital ID on device setup .

Soon your bank account will also be linked to digital ID . We all know the next step social credits .

I often wonder if we would be better of as a species without social media, it is not a necessity for anyone.
No doubt in my mind we would. One of the saddest things I see weekly is parents glued to their phones (assumption, rightly or wrongly, is social media) whilst their child participates in sport (in this case, swimming). Watching the excited little faces looking to their parents for encouragement only to be met with a a parent so engrossed in their phone they hardly know their child is there. Ban it, for young and old.

True story!
A few years ago my then 14yr old daughter and her friends watched a series called Gossip Girl and got the insane idea to expose nasty stuff about other kids at school.

They created a fake account Facebook page and posted mostly silly stuff until one day a boy told them about this other girl from the school who's mom has an OnlyFans account or page or whatever the term is...and had nude pics of her.

They exposed that on their Facebook page and all hell broke loose, the poor girl was taunted so much that she refused to go back to school.

I was called in for a meeting with all the other responsible girls and their parents. It was not nice at all. I was so pissed off at my kid and have been constantly watching her online activity since .

PS, the mom in question was super hot!...(if you didn't know you would never have guessed that she was into stuff like that)
