Johannesburg spent less than half its capital budget as roads crumbled and suburbs were left in the dark

49%? Impressive.

That's more than the percentage of days in a month where I have running water.

I spent the long weekend in SchlaapStadt (majority in the city bowl with some travel to Burgandy Estate/Blouberg): I struggled to see any roads that needed maintenance.

I landed back and the comparison is stark, using regional and municipal roads: I struggled to find any that weren't badly cracked or potholed. Even driving to Mall of Africa after dropping bags at home, to get takeaways for everyone, involved dodging potholes.

My regular travel involves New Road (either to get to the highway or cross to the industrial side) and a lot of the roads joining New Road (especially the intersections) are knackered and need to be completely resurfaced.

I think this spring I will finally get around to making my coffee table book: The Great Potholes of Midrand.
