Motorists shouldn’t buy these cars in South Africa – According to the AA

"Kia responded to the report, noting that the Sonet LS is compliant with all applicable South African legislative safety requirements, as stipulated by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications. "

This is the problem in South Africa. That car would never be allowed to sell in Europe they would be told to fly a kite. But they dump them into African countries. And this not just a Kia thing, a LOT of manufacturers sell scaled-down very unsafe cars here but in other countries they're spec'd to the brim with safety as standard.

I asked Google what this car is called in other countries: "The Kia Sonet is a subcompact crossover exclusively designed for and sold in emerging markets (such as Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America). It is not available in the USA or the UK, and therefore does not have an alternate name in those specific market"

"The Automobile Association warned that motorists should stay away from cars that fail to maintain basic safety requirements."

AA, you looking for shyte because they do only just meet the requirements.

I have no problem with this initiative, but it could be seen as targeting specific manufacturers? If - as I understand it - basically any car that does not have a minimum of 6 airbags is going to get a sub 3 star rating by default - then they should just list all cars with less than 6 right? Why wait for a "crash" test that will automatically rate it unsafe because of the lack of curtain airbags?

Still much safer than a wet look Corrola or a 2009 Citi Golf.
How about making roads safer with impounding/removing all un-roadworthy vehicles first?

Agreed. Why, for example, isn't the Corolla Cross focused on?
