Why Starlink has not applied for a licence in South Africa

What they say on the outside and what happens on the inside aren’t always one and the same thing are they?
That’s a lot of words to not answer a simple how long question. If you don't know the actual timeframe, just say that.

The ANC wants 30% ownership as a bribe...Elon told them to go fuk themselves.

That is the reason and the only reason.
Remember that the 30% sounds pretty innocuous and benign. It is far worse than that of course.

Voting rights, inflated dividends, hiring of crap-tier friends and family, big pay rises, sucking up to unions - ultimately the 100% gets asset stripped and service levels sink.

ZA is geofenced. You will not have service for longer than a day. If you do have service for longer than that, they will eventually add you to the list, with the same result. I was contacted by a tourist that brought starlink along for connectivity, he was blocked within a day.

It takes about 7 days of the dish being switched off to clear the "return to originating country" block. After which you will have another +-24h of service.

So if you are lucky, you can get about 4 days of service per month. Hardly worth the R1700 odd per month.

I still dont get why Uncle Elon simply doesnt sell Starlink to ZA citizens in neighboring countries.
Simple let them buy and pay for the service.
Screw the licencing requirements.

Most probably they don't want to alienate anyone and jeopardise the process. That has been their strategy in every country they've launched in. It's only as a last resort when a regime is totalitarian with no hope of launching they'd forego this.

Because other countries also look at what type of 'citizen' you are globally when deciding to award licenses and stuff so you don't play fast and loose with that stuff if you want to get licenses elsewhere.
