'They came with machetes' - deadline looms for migrants to leave South Africa

"Massive" ? 8000 malawians is probably just a drop in ocean in light of claims of millions of illegals but it is a start so let us see.

Rubbish DreamKing, utter rubbish.
Unfortunately illegal activity and protests in SA tend to go hand-in-hand. It's very sad to see. Far too few protests in this country are ever peaceful.

Remember fees-must-fall blocking roads and occupying buildings?

Even the "protest" we're discussing here has involved people with machetes forcing people from their homes with threats of violence. This is not peaceful.

in south africa

protest == riot or looting.

prove me wrong please.
Mostly, not in this case.

Next time you have someone breaking into your home remember to respect his rights and help him carry your stuff out.

I honestly don't get the emotional blackmail, we should be grown up enough to admit that there is nothing xenophobic about saying illegal immigrants must be sent back to their countries, entering another country illegally is a criminal offense, the fact that the government was sleeping on the job and allowed it to happen does not change anything.
Because you know that that is not whats being said... and also how its being done.
The problem is the framing of any kind of migrant as a criminal.
Its the narrative that someone "not from here" is an amoral person.

Everything about these anti-immigrant movement stinks. Its making enemies out of people who should be our friends.
The worst part is the mob mentality - and if that doesn't terrify you then you are a fool.

If you want secure borders then focus on the actual borders, criminals can easily move in and OUT of our ports and none of these marches come close to addressing that.

I don't support the protest, something wrong with your logic?

I don't support illegal immigrants also. got the notice?

I don't support any protest action and illegal immigrants. is that clear enough?

I don't disagree that Government has huge role to play but it is also our duty NOT to employ illegals.

4 million really seems a lot of illegals to me but I suppose we will never know. For comparison, there are 1.8 million seffrican Indians in SA so 4 million would be more than double that ?
There is a flipside to that coin, why do people feel the need to employ illegals? That may be the starting point of fixing this.

He is 100% wrong.
No. He's not. There is, unfortunately, a kernel of truth there whether you choose to admit it or not.

Again, Fees-must-fall was a protest. It was labelled as such in our media. They occupied buildings, destroyed property, blocked roads. That's a riot masquerading as a protest.

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen 'service delivery protests' devolve into wanton destruction of property. At this point I pretty much assume, by default, that any service delivery protest in poorer areas is going to become violent and require police to manage the situation. These are not simple protests. These are riots.

That's all fine. Pretending all protest are the July riots is just incorrect and that is the only thing disagreed with.

So far the protesters have been peaceful, there isn't unjust violence. They are checking documents. Yeah this is supposed to be the government's job. But the government failed to do it.

Essentially they are the same as good citizens out there repairing potholes.

They are cheaper, and do not have the same legal protection.

Can we use this same argument when calling people out for being incompetent? It's not automatically racist is it?

peaceful? if that is called "peaceful', that is why july riot was also "peaceful".

Foreigner allegedly beaten to death, others assaulted in PMB informal settlement

And what about the legal ones? They pay taxes and have deductions and even fall under the same bargaining councils. I know of a trucking company where the majority of their drivers (more than 50) are foreigners. All legal. The owner gets constant threats from nutjobs.
