New demerit system: What South African motorists need to know

I don't think it's a big issue, except as an administrative scam. I was stopped for a traffic infringement last week (that's a whole other thread). CoCT scanned my long-expired drivers licence card. Didn't blink an eyelid. More profitable to issue other fines for larger amounts...
I meant for insurance purposes in case of accidents. Insurance companies would definitely deny claim if you don't have DL, or don't they bother either ?

I got randomly pulled over for the first time in 6+ years at the end of last year... Got the fine for my expired driver's license, I then thought I might as well pay it within that grace period they have or whatever, but can't find that ticket anywhere against my ID.

I guess it's a data entry issue on their side, probably got my ID number wrong or something.
Anyway, I don't care, not going to bother with it then.

Have on 5 occasions presented video evidence to the lardass atttempting to ticket me for "rolling stop" at the same fricken stop over the last few months to argue they're talking BS and threaten them with civil action.

Without the camera would have had to go argue in court. Do not pass GO. Do not collect R200. Or maybe just cough up and move on with life.

The entire system is broken, manned by the dumbest, most corrupt, incompetent pieces of filth imaginable and the entire exercise is aimed at revenue generation, not saving lives.

If it *were* about saving lives we'd see them policing moving violations. They would be removing those logistics vehicles doing 10km/h on the freeway from the road and impounding them. There would be no taxi industry. Those parents dropping their spawn off at school wouldn't be jumping the same 4/5 stops every day of the week.

Clowns. all the way down.

From OUTA on X...

UPDATE: Government has today proclaimed the next phase of #AARTO, less than 2 days before it is due to take effect.

Our initial review has already raised serious concerns, including the absence of supporting regulations.

This raises important legal and practical questions about how the system is expected to operate from 1 July.

OUTA’s legal team is studying today’s proclamations in detail.

We’ll provide a comprehensive update on what this means for motorists, municipalities and businesses tomorrow.

Watch this space.

Not necessarily lekker. CoCT is free to set fines significantly higher than the national ones. No wonder they don't want to join...
Nobody is forcing you to break the law. It's a choice. If you get caught, pay the dues. Simple equation.

What happens if you come to a complete stop but the cop lies and said you didnt? Happens all the time where there is corruption.

I'm not aware of that problem in Cape Town, which is what the discussion was about. The higher fine amounts in CT.
