Another music lesson - David Bowie & “major tom”.


A trilogy of sorts beginning with David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”, ending with Peter Schilling’s “Major Tom”.
These is a bit more depth to each, but here are the basics


1) - “Space Oddity” (David Bowie):
this is about major tom going into space and unable to return home.
Throughout the song “ground control” & major tom are communicating - ending with ground control and major tom are no longer able to communicate.
Major tom resigns himself to his death, requesting ground control tell his wife “he loves her very much - she knows”.




2) Ashes to Ashes (David Bowie)
In this track ground control has received a message from major tom after many years.
Ground control has determined major tom is a drug addict ('we know major tom’s a junkie"), and thus an embarrassment, and do not particularly want to see him return to earth.
The video ends with David Bowie walking with him mother along a beach.



3) Major Tom (Peter Schilling)
Ground control has made a decision to rescue major tom.
A spacecraft is prepared to go on it’s mission - it lifts off an reaches major tom.
Major Tom sends his love to his wife - he’s coming home, but unbeknown to him, she is now in a relationship with someone else.
Major tom transfers to the rescue spacecraft which then commences on it’s return trip, but disintegrates on entering earth’s atmosphere.

heard this in the car this morning - was actually playing in a car alongside me.
another of those peculiar songs that gives you an itch to bounce along with the track while driving.
