Iconic South African company saying goodbye to Eskom coal power

Sasol, a global chemicals and energy company founded in South Africa in 1950, has significantly reduced its reliance on Eskom coal power.

Through a power purchase agreement with Enel Green Power RSA, Sasol is wheeling energy from the company's Impofu Wind Farm cluster in the Eastern Cape to its Secunda site in Mpumalanga.

They do make a lot of their own power, but they need offset the pollution that and other parts of their process causes with some greens.

No, it's a part of their ESG strategy. They wheel it all through the Eskom grid (they still use Eskom as that is more reliable and they don't make enough to fully supply their needs)

Yes. Eskom are specialized at making electricity from coal. I met a guy while in high school who told me Sasol wheel through the Eskom grid because Sasol power is "dirtier". Sasol make it as a byproduct of their steam making process.

And they buy back from Eskom at a cheaper rate than what they sell it to Eskom.

Or that is how the model used to work in the past. Maybe it has changed since?
