Prepaid electricity meter users hit with fines up to R75,000

The Freedom Front Plus in Tshwane says it is receiving a growing number of complaints about residents being fined up to R75,000 on false allegations of tampering with their prepaid meters.

"In many cases, residents claim that these fines are unfounded and legally questionable," the political party stated. In addition to the unfair fines, residents also alleged they faced intimidation.
 
Rate payers association, form a whatsapp group and start paying rates into your own trust account. Fackem. Let the pigs starve.
 
That’s their MO. They did the same thing to our complex when they wanted to move everyone to prepaid.
We got mad, jumped up and down, but in the end they moved everyone to prepaid anyways.
 
I wish we could move from postpaid to prepaid in Johannesburg. We are now forced to pay a connection charge of around R1360 per month even if we use no electricity. Currently we are not allowed to move from postpaid to prepaid as this connection charge is a major source of revenue for the Johannesburg City Council.

There is no way that the fixed charge is legal. Both cape town and tshwane have lost court cases about random fixed charges being added/changed.

if you go overseas for 6 months you still have to pay the above

do houses pay the same as me ?

It doesn't really matter whether you are post or pre paid. They will get their money. I'm in Cape Town on prepaid and the fixed charges just get added to the rates account.

Yeah it is. I disconnected coz of that fixed charge and despite my 450kWh average monthly usage the payback is still exactly 2 years. Next year June I’m in the green.

Apparently the fee for homeowners has now increased to R1480. I think that this fee increases to over R2000 per month if you have a three phase connection.

we have 3 phase so if it goes up 10% it will not hit R2000

OK well your fee will be around R1980 after a 10% increase !

I think more homeowners are just going to stop paying their rates and the City Council will just keep going deeper and deeper into debt until they are unable to borrow any more.
