One-month wait for Sanral to deliver an e-tag in Gauteng

I often get nervous going behind someone in the Shesha lane because I've had a few instances where some clown went in that lane and then gets to the gate and decides this is not where they're meant to be and needs to reverse to go to another lane.

I think the one on the N17 had issues this week. There was a truck that had to reverse out (what a mess) once he was out a car went in, boom did not open and he also had to reverse out. Next car went in.... rinse repeat.

It was chaos.

Was the same last week, I think Monday if I recall correctly.

Rookie numbers....

5 years. No tag. Stopped bothering after 2 months.

Clowns

On the way home this afternoon, 3 of 5 gates open with very long queues. etag open.
Had to smile, especially because one ******** kept on my arse and tried to bully me. He joined the queue, I did not have to wait😄

What I dont get is why they dont add the tap-and-go option to the e-tag lane? If the e-tag fails for some awesome reason you still have the option to tap your card/phone/watch
That would just make the lane a tap-and-go lane as well, making people to join that shouldn't be there. I have never had or seen an e-tag fail yet, not saying it doesn't happen but it isn't so common that I saw it.

This would be a good idea. The battery in an e-tag has a finite life before the e-tag needs replacing. People tend to find out it's flat when it does not work as they pull up to the boom.

I do not think the tag fails, but rather the reader. Driving from Sasolburg to Johannesburg, the Shesa lane at the Grasmere Plaza, going there at multiple times it did not read our vehicle's tag, but the other lanes does not have that problem. Going back to Sasolburg, I have yet to experience the problem. And only that specific lane, nowhere else. And not always, it just randomly does that.

the tags do fail, as they do have a non replaceable lithium battery inside, and the newer tags also have a smaller one. what kills the batteries is heat, and also all the hidden readers that ping the tags to get average traffic speeds, as the tag data format allows the tags to silently reply to an interrogation signal without alerting the vehicle user, as there are a set of bits in the field that are there to enable or disable the audio feedback beep, and the flash of light showing a tag read.

@mylesillidge

I would like to draw your attention to what appears to be an ongoing issue with SANRAL's e-tag system.

SANRAL continues to accept online payments for e-tags through its website despite apparently having no stock available for delivery. After making payment, customers are only informed if they contact the call centre themselves, that there is a stock shortage and that there is no estimated delivery date.

According to the call centre, no online e-tag deliveries have been made for at least the past four months. Customers are instead advised to visit a toll plaza to purchase an e-tag in person, even though they have already paid online.

I have contacted several toll plazas along the N2 and N3 in KwaZulu-Natal, and many have also confirmed that they have no stock. Some indicated that they have been without stock for more than two months and have no indication of when new stock will arrive.

The concern is that SANRAL continues accepting payment for a product that it is currently unable to supply, without clearly informing customers of the stock shortage before payment is made. This has resulted in unnecessary inconvenience, delays, and frustration for motorists.

I believe this issue warrants public attention and would appreciate it if you could investigate the matter.
