No new disc games on PlayStation from January 2028

Playing mostly on PC so haven't owned any physical games since PS4 days, but hell, I am feeling rather old having witnessed the era of video stores, magazine stores, music stores and now game stores die out.

I don't believe the new generation getting into gaming today will ever understand the feeling of walking around a mall going from a Musica to CNA to Incredible and just browse through DVD's, CD's, Game boxes, going through sale bins, looking through PC gamer or Nag magazines...
Or just haning at top cd listening to samples…

I still have all my nag cds/dvds. All 147 of them (Apr 2003-Jun 2015). And all magazines from then until now. Can't throw them away.

Best ones were those with free full games like GTA2, Daggerfall etc.
I had soooo many of those as well. Threw them all out though. Still come across a NAG disk or two every now and again.

Does anyone actually expect discs to continue indefinitely? This was always going to happen.

No one is seriously working on new disc technologies. The 100GB limit is already being exceeded and get worse over time. PCs don't come with disc drives anymore and most cases don't even support it.
Why would console makers want to retain the final mechanical part of their machine, it is just a liability (another thing that can break and has more chance of breaking). When you become the only consumer of the technology you also start losing economies of scale.

Bit of plottwist on that one, back in day when we collected anime on discs from that anime store in jhb, can't remember the name now, we eventually realised your discs can ge that "disc rott" or whatever it was - so no?

Well ignoring disc rot, just the production of discs in general. It will become an enthusiast thing like vinyls
