Very slow file transfer from SSD to USB

I've got a strange issue here - I have a Rogueware 2.5'' SATA NX100S 512GB installed on my midrange Dell laptop, 16GB RAM. When copying a folder (contents about 700MB MS Word files) from the desktop to a USB drive, the copying process stopped completely several times, taking about 10 minutes to complete. I've done this same process many times before, always completed in a matter of a couple of minutes. I checked RAM and processor use during copying but they looked okay, so I suspected the drive. I've now had a look with CrystalDiskInfo and the result is Good: 97%. Malwarebytes reports no issues. Windows Security/Defender reports no issues. I'm using a USB 3 port for the transfer. What else can I check?

You checked the drive - I assume you meant the USB drive?

I checked the SSD with CrystalDiskInfo - there is another thread dedicated to poor performance/death of these drives so I checked the SSD first. The USB is a fresh 64GB Verbatim.

As a matter of interest, how long does it take to zip those files?

About 35 seconds to zip.

I've tried 3 different USB ports, same/similar result. The only one I didn't test is the USB/eSATA combo port. The USB flash I used is out of the box, same source as many I've used before, not sure of the OOB format.

Device manager is clear apart from some known Bluetooth issues. I'll try another machine.
