6/10 - Not bad but the details killed it

Overall not bad, but the show gets killed by the details. Sometimes details are just that, and like with From, we don't need everything dumbed down into "the children" and / or "the mother." This and the ending tanked it for me. Everything else was fun and entertaining, not bad at all and actually ok to watch.

Not a series as such, but busy re-watching The World at War, this time the enhanced edition. Still very, very good.

The interviews with participants are really interesting. Fascinating how many of the German and French soldiers speak near perfect English. Almost indistinguishable from the native English spoken by the Brit interviewees, with only the pronunciation of a word here or there giving it away. Think many of the officers perhaps had pre-war education in the UK.

It's why that new Tom Hanks show feels so lightweight...like watching a tiktok versus a Ken Burns opus.

I was going to start with that, but it kinda prompted me to a do re-watch of TWaW instead, haha. Maybe in a year or so I'll watch the Tom Hanks one.

It's really good, but it's fascinating how much they had to leave out, even though it feels pretty comprehensive.

Also reminded me of this fantastic book about the Battle of Kursk. The scale was just insane. The Germans were losing 4,000 soldiers every day, and the Soviets 17,000. Almost incomprehensible.

"The Battle of Kursk is the single largest battle in the history of warfare. It was one of the costliest battles of the Second World War, the single deadliest armoured battle in history, and the largest tank battle in history. The opening day of the battle, 5 July, was the single costliest day in the history of aerial warfare in terms of aircraft shot down."

Inbetweener chiiick series you want to be watching, right? I mean what can go wrong when you crash and burn in style and undeniable pink. I suppose after this the only logical next thing is to actually watch legally blond....
