President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa must reduce its reliance on AWS, Google, and Microsoft

The irony of AWS starting in SA.

Just imagine if the government supported the space better we may have been the global powerhouse for cloud computing.

ahhh it can be done ..... if your country is smart and your country is china. Anything is possible bafana bafana qualified

It doesn't look like this will be a new build. It will be a repositioning of the existing Sebowa Cloud run by the CSIR's Centre for High Performance Computing and their National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System. This is an academic research cloud that has been running for several years from data centres in Pretoria and Cape Town. The system runs on open-source software, Openstack for orchestration and Ceph for the distributed storage system.

South Africa building its own cloud infrastructure, says Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that South Africa is investing in its own cloud infrastructure to reduce its reliance on global giants in the space.

In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa welcomed the billions invested by players such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, but emphasised that South Africa must develop its own capabilities.
This is the goal - nothing else.

This is the kind of flippant statement that can only be made by someone utterly ignorant of the scale and technological sophistication of the large established cloud service providers. It is so out of touch with reality that it's scary.
whats scary is somebody like this is in charge of a country,
no wonder the ANC decides to randomly rename things constantly/blame apartheid constantly , its a lot easier to rename/blame than it is to actually fix things.

Cyril you spoke of a smart city before your first election, how's that going? Maybe step back on some of the pie in the sky stuff and get back to basics.
