No new disc games on PlayStation from January 2028

Apparently Sony were not prepared for this huge backlash. They thought it would go a lot more smoothly.

No social media posts in 5 days, that's a long time for them.

Push Square has listed the PS5 and PS4 games losing online features across July and August.

This includes online services ending for games like Madden NFL 23, Tearaway, NBA 2K Playgrounds 2, WWE 2K Battlegrounds, NHL 22, and NHL 23.

There are no full PS Store delistings in this batch at the time of writing, but it is another reminder that digital libraries still depend heavily on servers, services, and publisher support.

All you can possibly hope for is a delay
This will happen

If they cave, they will slowly reintroduce it without a big announcement
They will go the Nintendo route and start releasing a few big releases digital only over time

And while everyone is distracted by the pretty lights, season passes, battle passes and cosmetic microtransactions, digital only tat they don't whine about and have no problem pissing their money away on, they will wipe their eyes out one morning and realise the last 10 games they bought were digital only

And this is not 'defeatist' thinking

I haven't bought physical since 2015
We live in a amazing age of one click download and installs. Why the **** would I want to regress back to waiting for a disc to arrive?

There is always a subset of people stuck in the past hindering progress and as always, they eventually will fall in line with the future or will be forced to go find something else to do

Besides them and a few small publishers, these games are DRM-free. Physical doesn't matter. You download your installer which never calls home or uses a code and you can burn the game to Blu-Ray or keep it on a USB stick.

The problem is that it is currently up to the individual companies how the digital rights are handled

We are entering new territory and therefore there are no legitimate legislation regarding how the ownership should be handled and what responsibilites the publishers have toward their customers

This is the **** that needs to be sorted out

Where were the lawsuits then?

Nah, didn't give a **** about that
Not having rows and rows of plastic clutter up the house is where they draw the line and start suing

The outrage is understandable because this is a huge development in how games are bought, played, sold, etc.
It's not some small announcement Sony has just made.

It's honestly a huge decision that Sony announced really poorly.

I understand the outrage, I'm not one to get worked up like that but I understand why some people do. If a person doesn't really care much about physical I don't think they really understand how much this matters to people who do.
