How to cancel an SABC TV licence

South Africans who no longer own a TV or have left the country don't require a TV licence, but cancelling one is easier said than done.

According to the Broadcasting Act of 1999, households with devices capable of receiving television broadcast signals are required to hold a TV licence.

According to lots of laws things are supposed to happen a certain way...

SABC can largely go and fsck itself anyway.

Amazing how the country unites against this R30 odd ronds per month tax like our lives depend on it lol.

This is the same as Gauteng toll roads. Eventually after everyone has stollen enough it will fall away.

Just got told i am being handed over to another collection agency, so now the number of blocked calls will be one number set higher. 2010 World cup was another thing I did not watch, let alone the 2026 one.

Removing the tuner allows the person to get off paying the TV license for the current licensing period - so one year if it is done at the beginning of the period. The application to do this is R300 rand, more than the cost of the license for that year. https://www.tvlic.co.za/tvlic/faqs/

On top of that there are no inspectors so you pay the R300 on top of the license fees for nothing.

It's clearly designed to make it a non-viable option. You're contributing even more to the SABC if you go the "remove the tuner" option.

Only viable option to not contribute is do your best to make sure you never have a TV license in the first place.

Phoned business lic tv yesterday , gave notice a year ago , feed back
According to them they got a back log
Promise to contact me , but that never going to happen

Don't have to cancel one if you never got one in the first place...
