EV drivers in South Africa struggling with panel beaters after crashes

Never, ever underestimate the stupidity the human race can get. Backyard mechanics, quick-fix mechanics in the CBD, etc.
Years down the line, your neighbour's garage is catching fire because he heard of Steve around the corner who works on cars in his yard and charges very little
Meanwhile people are forced into these options because the STEALERSHIP rapes the vehicle owner
Example: R900 to replace a silly little light bulb costing R7.50

The main problem is how silent they run - one d00s decided to switch off the mandatory "engine noise" in his SUV...dangerous for pedestrains if a car is completely silent.
Must have been because it played that ice cream tune and was too embarrassed. Can’t remember which brand does that.

Biggest issue is manuals, say what you like, but Tesla has every single manual, and the software to repair the cars, available for free online, so you can actually diagnose and repair most of the common ones yourself. OK they also have many known poor parts, like door handles, but you can get them, and fix it yourself, and tell the car it has a new part.

People don't understand. It's easy for a layman to follow a manual or a youtube video but insurance is very finicky about these things. Even if something goes wrong on a part you are trained to work with and you are found liable for it your insurance might not cover it if you also worked on something you are not trained to work with. Professionals will rather err on the side of caution even if they can technically do something.

If the charge port is damaged in a collision, that would be a real issue...
I follow a few people who salvage EV's and its not as much of an issue as you think.

The tesla's at least have safety's on the charge ports to prevent this issue.
I saw someone do a salvage on a Tesla where the car had been hit on the charge port.

Its not a problem because they can order the part off ebay.

I happened to park next to an Ora this morning, and noticed that the charge port looks f*ugly. Oh, it's supposed to have a cover! I wonder how much that costs to replace?
