The R36S retro gaming handheld thread

Still think my R36H ProMax was the best option.

Build in Wifi, bigger screen and decent grip for long play. (Same Chipset)

Edit: And if you shop around: Also R700

Edit2: I had the
R36S Get ready to cramp after 30min of play
R35H Screen was just a tad too small, also no WIfi
R46H It also had Bluetooth, HDMI out and stronger CPU but I did not like the square screen for the games I play.
Gave them away as Xmas Presents.
The second option from your URL is current on special for R614.

But i don't see the store listed on the list of trusted sellers. Would you still spring for it or rather look for another option on a trusted store?

They do hit you with a hefty shipping fee...so maybe not such a great deal

This is the dumbest thing I've read today.
Surely the the dumbest thing you have read was Yourself opening threads in 2015 saying you watching Star wars for the first time. Then when you thought everyone forgot that thread in 2020 you told us again you watched it for the first time. Then when you thought Covid destroyed everyone's memory, you opened another thread last year claiming you are watching Star wars for the first time.

Oof, Speedaf struck again with a R941 order

Fell down the rabbit hole of these retor handhelds. I am bascially looking for a handheld that can run android or just an app like spotify, prime, netflix so I can use it for light gaming and some multimedia. Will mostly use when traveling and stuck at airports or when I have 20-30 miunutes to burn somewhere.

Budget is probably R2-4k looking for best bang for buck so not sure if anyone has a device they can recommend ?

Not 100% sure what games I want to play probablya classic arcade games and maybe some PS 1 or 2 games. The nintendo switch lite also looks like an option just saw some videos fo teh remastered Tony Hawk Pro skater 1-2 and 3-4 probably 2 of my top 5 games of all time so also appealing.

Pretty good summary now I just need to decide if I should go for the anberic GR35XXSP and play only retro games or go for the more premium Ayn Thor

its quite kak this doesnt have the Time Crises Game.

See this launched this week, might be a competitor to the Ayn Thor although the 1 screen is the difference. Ideally I want t Thor or a flip 3 (hoping it launches) otherwise this seems like a really good value oprion.

So after much deliberation I decided to move on from the desktop emulation club and join the retro-handheld gang where all the cool kids hang out. Thanks to all the thread contributors, you guys made it much easier to get gaming when my handheld arrived last week.
So here's a quick review of my new handheld. Maybe a little OT given the thread title, but I don't think this justifies a new thread.

What: Powkiddy X55
Why: Price vs performance. I wanted something for about R1500 or less that can play PS1 and PSP games. Would have loved a Mangmi Air X, but I just couldn't bring myself to part with more than R2000 when entering unknown territory (handheld emulation).
Where: Powkiddy store (powkiddy.com)
How much: $74.99 for the handheld (used a $5 coupon) and $9.99 for a hard case. Was under R1500 for everything, customs included. Free shipping when buying from official store but 4PX used SAPO as their last mile partner, so it took ~45 days for the order to arrive.
Specs: 2GB Ram, RK3566 chipset, 5.5" IPS screen with 1280x720 resolution.
Performance: Much better than expected. Based on the reviews I saw, my expectation was that I would need to install Gamma OS Core on a spare sdCard to be able to run PSP games like God of War: Chains of Olympus, but using the latest version of Rocknix I get between 24 and 30 fps in GoW on the more demanding parts with 2x upscaling enabled. 24fps doesn't sound great, but in all honesty it feels fine while playing. When pushing it to 3x upscaling, it is still playable for the most part but I do get dips in fps below 15 which is definitely noticeable.
What I like: Very comfortable in hand, the shape and button layout is very good. The display is big, beautiful and inviting like a good woman. The buttons and joysticks are very good and feels solid. The better than expected performance is a big bonus, Rocknix rocks.
What I dislike: It doesn't ship with a games sdCard (which is fine, I have my own roms) but the OS sdCard arrived corrupted. I always intended to do a fresh Rocknix and Gamma OS Core installation, but still can't help feeling they could have saved me another $5 by keeping their screwed-up, cheapass card. Also, it is a fingerprint magnet on both the front and back. And not much other negatives, really. This is a pretty good retro-handheld imho.
Some final notes: All the reviews mentioned the loud shoulder triggers, but in all honesty it is not nearly as loud as what I expected. Battery life of the 4000mAh unit is good, but a couple hundred more mAh would have been a bonus.
What about the Case: The hardshell case is good quality with space for cables, in-ear earphones and a cloth (none of which is included, btw). I'm pretty glad I added it at the last moment.

So yeah, I would definitely recommend it if you can get it for $75 or less. If you can spend a little more and don't mind Android, have a look at the Mangmi Air X which doubles the RAM and has a bit more oomph under the hood.
