What's The Deal With Smoking In Pubs?

You can say "go somewhere else" but I often only find out a restaurant does not follow smoking laws when I am already there and sometimes half way through my meal. I only know when someone takes out a cigarette. If I see it on arrival I won't sit down but I still have wasted time getting there.

If they put it big on their website that they don't follow the law and put a sign outside their building I would have no issue however as they don't I expect them to follow the law.

No loophole, they just don't give two shts for the law and in many places there's very little enforcement of the rule.

Don't get me wrong on this one, I won't go to a restaurant where people smoke inside, but I'm not about to get all Karen and report them to the authorities, I'll just go somewhere else.

Fk that, I've gone to places with friends and only found out to late once I’m there that they allow smoking everywhere.
What now I must uber all the way back home at my cost or suffer from all the secondhand smoke, fk them obey the law it’s there for good reason. I haven't reported any place yet but I have been sorely tempted to. It's really not hard to have a dedicated smoking area and smokers don't mind using them.

That hasn't been my experience, only the smaller/scummy bars/clubs seem to allow smoking everywhere, the majority have dedicated smoking rooms or outside areas.

Astonishing how pubs survive in countries with indoor smoking bans, and somehow manage to become cleaner, more welcoming and more enjoyable for everyone -- families included.

Well, everyone except the chimney crowd who apparently can’t survive five minutes in civilised society without fumigating the room.

Also love the idea that expecting a business to follow health law is “Karen” behaviour, while expecting everyone else to breathe your smoke indoors is “culture”.

The “culture” defence sounds awfully clever until you spend five seconds actually thinking about it.

“It’s our culture to drive home pissed from the pub; if you don’t like it, find another road.”
“It’s our culture to smoke on the forecourt; if you don’t like it, find another petrol station.”
“It’s our culture to ignore food-hygiene rules in the kitchen; find another eatery.”

Shared spaces and public houses have rules because one person’s habit stops being private the moment everyone else is forced to participate in it. “Culture” is a flimsy excuse for **** behaviour.

The irony is that the true “Karens” are the ones who think their filthy habit entitles them to pollute the environment and diminish everyone else’s enjoyment of public spaces -- but recognising that would require a level of introspection and empathy that these same people seem to lack.

Dear smokers: you picked a **** habit to addict yourselves to. That's your problem. It doesn't give you the right to make it everyone else's. 'snot difficult to understand, ne? ;)
 
One can kind of expect for a pub to have and allow smokers. There will be loud foul mouth conversations. And there will be the village bicycle next to guy with the Hilux bakkie.

What is frustrating is when 'fancy" restaurants put the designated smoking area so that a draft takes all the smoke through the restaurant anyways. Difficult to enjoy French toast like that.

Because it's your liver not the people around you.

A better analogy would be "imagine going to a pub to drink and then not being allowed to vomit all over the people next to you."
