The new increases are in. My bill before this was around 2000 on average. The figure above is for similar water consumption except an extra 150 rand as I had used a bit over the free water threshold. Otherwise the bill would have been 2200 rand. For the average person who has electricity on their bill I can see their cost having gone up an extra 600 to 800 rand a month.

3 phase supply?
Yep, came with the house. I have a kak old solar system we installed back in 2018, good ol Axpert 5kva 3phase and as you can tell from the bill the little system has been good to us.

The thing is when i check at my DB in the house, everything looks like its on single phase? Maybe the underfloor heating which we have not used in easily a decade needs that much juice? Also got solar geysers so heating water is not an issue. I have been tempted to grab a 12kva single phase but ultimately i need a pro in to guide me.
Not having the best of luck finding installers who don't want to take me for a ride

I havent seen a 3 phase house connection before personally but it makes sense to me that your incoming supply is 3 phase and then each phase is used to supply different parts of the house. So everything is still single phase if that makes sense. Similar idea to what I have at my place, its 2 inverters (lets hypothetically call it a 2 phase supply) and each supplies its own circuit in the DB.

Switching to single phase is pretty easy. You just make use of one phase and connect all the different circuits in your DB to the inverter. You then only use one phase from CP into the inverter. A 12kVA is some 18k for a Luxpower. A 15kW Deye is 37k. It might be easier to just cough up the money and get the 15kW or heck just do 20kW and get it over and done with.
 
That is R53.28/kWh. More expensive than New York City. A petrol genny is about R20/kWh.
When are you filling out the disconnect forms?

Some of us taking a wait and see approach. Will Eskom collapse / give in and go with coal again / get replaced / will the planet end... all relevant. 😐

This has got nothing to do with Eskom. Also, that R53/kwh is also using coal. 90 units in durban costs R405 for single phase post paid electricity, not R1400 as with shittypowa✊. Both use the same Eskom.

You don't change the 3 phase connection on their side. You just use one of their phases to supply your single phase inverter. The single phase inverter then supplies all the circuits in the house.

You basically keep paying a 3 phase connection while using only 1 phase. Its only 250 rand difference between single and 3 phase so no point in trying to change it.

I would get a competent electrician in to have a look at your current house setup and go from there as to what would be the best going forward in terms of using three phase or converting to single phase. Then you can decide what will be best in terms of suitable inverter, battery, PV panels, etc.

As an example, my inlaws house in Hartebeespoort is three phase and they run a three phase 12kW Sunsynk inverter with 4 Hubble batteries and around 7.2kWp PV panels. They also have a three phase EV charger to charge their EV car but it is three phase because the house is fed three phase. The reason for the three phase is that there is aircon in every bedroom, underfloor heating in four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms, they have two electric geysers in series and an evaporative cooler before you get to all the lighting, fridges, freezers, etc. Way too much for a single phase to handle...

This house is single phase with 100A main switch on the DB. It has 7 aircons.

3 phase or Single phase is not really relevant for power consumption on residential unless you are fully utilizing all 3 phases (60/80A a phase?). He can chuck a 20kW single phase inverter and if all his DB is wired to accept single phase it will be perfectly fine.

My old workplace was a 3 phase 15kW with 5kW per phase. Lupus 12kW will perform just as well as the 15kW at that company sans the 3kW difference. Throw in the 14kW and you won’t notice the difference.

That's all I did.
We had a three phase ESKOM connection so I spent some time looking at options and decided that since it was only the borehole and one of my machines that actually needed three phase it was simpler and easier to just go single.

So a single phase borehole pump and three 5kW inverters able to supply 60A to any one of the houses or workshop depending on who needs it at any one time has really worked out well.
It also allows me to take anyone of the inverters out of the system with no problems amongst other options.

I like options...
