Canal+ driving DStv customers to piracy

DStv's loss of premium content on M-Net, including nearly all major HBO and first-run Warner Bros. Discovery shows, is forcing more South African customers to use illegal streaming and torrenting.

This is the view of veteran broadcast journalist Thinus Ferreira, who told 702 that the loss was due to Canal+'s refusal to sign an extended contract with Warner Bros. Discovery.

So there was never anything on DSTV but now there is even less.

Also there is now a massive gap that no one is filling. You can't get HBO MAX in SA and you can't get those shows on DSTV.

I wonder if anyone will make a move ?

Is the DSTV demographic really resorting to torrenting and illegal services? Thought it was mostly toppies who still use this.

Oh look, Canal+ is doing exactly what the definition says to do "Value extraction is the act of capturing economic value or maximizing profit without creating any new products or services. It often involves exploiting monopolies, manipulating markets, or implementing aggressive cost-cutting to extract wealth from an existing system rather than expanding the overall economic "pie".

It's a real shame as the HBO content was the main reason I subscribed to Showmax. Although after one episode of House of Dragons season 3, I don't consider it a huge loss. It's so boring, heavily dialogue based and 'woke'. I would rather watch the SABC evening dramas and I'm not kidding.

What breaks my mind in our country is that we can subscribe to every single streaming service available in the country and still not be able to get basic well known movies/shows.

You tell me then what other option does one have except firing up the torrent service's and doing a piracy?

Losing first-run HBO and Warner Bros. content completely guts the value of DStv Premium. Nobody is going to keep paying those crazy premium prices when major global shows like House of the Dragon or The Last of Us just disappear overnight.

There are a few that i'm missing.

Euphoria season 3
The Pitt season 2
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1

That's enough to subscribe to a service in itself... excluding stuff I don't even know about.

No we're just spending our money on other streaming services with far better than content than the nonsense on DSTV... I don't feel a need to go pirating all over the seas. I mean yes a Plex server with some downloads is cheaper but with Prime, Netflix, Disney and Youtube subscriptions i don't need to. The only thing i don't need to do is pay DSTV...
