Coming in from the left field. I don't know who the providers were, so can't speak to thats specifically, this is general.indeed everyone should be free to ride their hobby horse, especially when related to something like the fskup that is RICA and pre-registered prepaid SIM cards....very much in the public interest.
But don't you feel that it is a little too convenient that the "secure packaging" solution/regulation that she is banging on about is very niche to 2 of her former employer's clients and not actually a globally recognised standard or effective way to fight mobile fraud?
Yes, RICA is fack up of note, a joke. There are many ways to subvert it, it is being done and to our detriment.
SIM swaps? Our finest abused it before it beame an international thing.
But then again, international standards does not necessarily translate to South Africa (or Africa). I've seen these so called solutions and standards in various things when it comes to criminality. Trying to implement it in the local environment is a cluster fack of note. Think FICA. Yet we have massive mule networks because people cannot be deprived of banking, yet they have no fixed address. Meanswhile the informal unbanked sector is said to be bigger than the formal sector. Dirty money in, comes out cleaner than an OMO bath.
Think POPIA, supposedly based upon the GDPR which is globally recognised. It's literally the very thing that has been weaponised to the detriment of the public interest, the biggest weaponisers in Africa. It's why bad actors go after Truecaller (not that I use it) using POPIA as a stick. It why our national coza registry is littered with fraud despite international standard are being followed and those managing it self-fellating on their success, not bothering to question why their biggest reseller is also the most dirty and in the EU. It meets the standards, but fit for purpose? Meanwhile at the CIPC you now have to register, share PI to look up businesses, only to find the business belongs to John Doe (yes, really). Yes, but the POPIA box was ticked?? Now "John" can use his business registration to open up a business bank acct - hell, it even done for him. How does that translate where John does business globally? There is an expectation that people globally will rush to the CIPC to register share the PI, potentially leaking it. This is exatcly how we end up on grey lists.
I always say the rest of the world is not ready for Africa when it comes to these things. I've watched these big international players punt their solutions meeting international standards, evene IBM, in seminars etc, while I know exactly how ineffective they are.
Sorry, I'm not a standards compliant fan. Ticking a box does not solve a problem, except the requirement that the box has to be ticked.
Btw, COVID time was an interesting one with RICA. I loved it!
So, sorry, I'm reading these posts, the manufactured outrage, munching popcorn.
