Dongfeng launching a new REEV in South Africa with prices from R559,000

The electric motor is used to reduce fuel consumption as a hybrid while driving, but can be used on full EV mode.

Thus, not a backup for running out of petrol per se...but if you only have charge left without petrol, then sure....
The engine (generator) only kicks in when battery is flat so you'll break down when you run out of petrol.

OK, well that makes more sense then.

Nope... that is not how REEV vehicles work, they have an onboard generator to charge the battery. They are for all intents and purposes an EV with an onboard power supply.

Ahh, my apologies. You are correct sir...but technically if the battery is charged when you run out of fuel, you can still drive on battery for a short while.

Damn, the charge port is in the front on the bumper..... Goodluck trying to get this car repaired after a fender bender or any front smash

I'd hazard a guess that this chinesium is better built than anything you've ever driven.

Even that car was better built than the POS's eggy has driven in his life.

Just too much complication and things to go wrong in the long run, a generator and an electric setup. They should rather shove more batteries in it in place of the generator to increase the range.
